I'm very sorry but you are mistaken, it is true that oxygen can not be " used up " but thats the atoms you are thinking of Oxygen gas , O2, is converted to CO2 in the combustion of paper. This will lower the pressure in the bottel and the higher pressure outside the bottel will try to even out the pressure inside the bottel forcing the egg inside .... Atleast you were close to correct and you tried your best , thats all I ask of you. XP

i would just like to clarify that the firse does not "use up" the oxygen. no matter, even oxygen, can be created or destroyed. it is simply the heat that forces the gas (oxygen, CO2, whatever) to expand and then to contract when the fire goes out and it cools.

..negative pressure does not suck it in. The higher outside air pressure forces it in. There is a difference. If you did the experiment in a vacuum chamber (with air in the bottle) it wouldn't work.

I stand corrected.

Actually no. The fire consumes the oxygen creating a low pressure zone. Also the air in the bottle becomes hot and forces out air until the egg is placed in position, as the air cools further adding to the low pressure. The outside higher air pressure forces the egg in. Pedantic bugger aren't I?

Don't put it in there! Embarrasing to explain to the doctor later when you cant get it out again XD

As someone pointed out earlier, the fire creates heat in the bottle, causing the air inside to expand. When he puts the egg on top of the bottle the oxygen is depleted (turned into CO2) and the fire goes out. This causes the temperature to go down and the air inside to contract again, causing a lesser pressure then the surrounding atmosphere (negative pressure). Hence the air pressure outside the bottle pushes the egg in as the negative pressure inside the bottle "sucks" it in at the same time.

the fire uses all the oxygen creating a vacuum so the boiled egg gets sucked in.
