LordShadowblade ::: Favorites Read the works of St.John of the Cross. He was a saintly (Well, lol, he is a SAINT) man, I don't think he would've even had such thoughts after he had attained the holiness he had. After all, he taught other great mystics like St. Teres of Avila! 07-09-15 11:35:22 __________________________________________________
rkhobo ::: Favorites mayaxenia: I appreciate the insight. This explains all of the seductive wording in this memoir turned to music. I am however a bit of a skeptic given all the scandals with priests in the past few years. While your explanation is the more likely, scholarly one, it could also be St. John of the Cross wrote these words to disguise a church-forbidden affair he was having. These things DO happen as we have all seen. So I will always wonder... 07-09-11 12:43:01 __________________________________________________
rkhobo ::: Favorites This is very interesting insight thank you. Of course, we weren't there when St John of the Cross wrote the lyrics, so whether this was truly divine-inspired sensual love or earthly love he was disguising we don't know. Excuse my skepticism, but sexual deviant behavior among priests is rampant these days, so while I'd love to believe your interpretation, I just don't know. But again thanks. 07-09-10 23:16:39 __________________________________________________

mayaxenia ::: Favorites spanish mystics, st.john of the cross among them, did not distinguish between secular and saintly love. they derived this understanding from muslim mystics and sufis, who often describe love in very sensual terms, but you can also read it as yearning of the soul for God. Loreena is aware of this tradition, as the video was made in the Alhambra, another site of "cross-fertilization". 07-09-08 18:48:32 __________________________________________________
mayaxenia ::: Favorites rkhobo, if you are really interested in this, you should read more on the tradition of divine and earthly love in the muslim mystic tradition. the beloved is usually described in very sensual terms, so you can read it as a conventional love poem, but actually the love of the soul for god is implied. the spanish mystics, among them st.john of the cross, were inspired by this tradition. the video was also made in alhambra in spain, so loreena must be aware of the mixed heritage of this tradition. 07-09-08 18:44:55 __________________________________________________
rkhobo ::: Favorites One of the most beautiful songs--ever. This is my favorite song of Loreena's along with Lady of Shallot. Just Beautiful. If you listen to the words, it's a great song for lovers. It is about St. John of the Cross and his devotion to Jesus--but I have my doubts. I'm sure he was devoted to Christ, but this song sounds like he was meeting a forbidden REAL love. Those things aren't talked about in the church but they exist of course...Am I the only one who is suspicions...? 07-09-03 14:02:38 __________________________________________________
bmcneese45 ::: Favorites Hauntingly beautiful music and video. 07-08-29 01:52:09 __________________________________________________
RivenrockGardens ::: Favorites I'd love to make a video with this song. I mean a big Hollywood type with two young lovers, and the most beautiful castle I can think of, Heidelberg, where I was born. 07-08-27 22:20:14 __________________________________________________
plisney ::: Favorites Such a beautiful song!! Quite possibly my favorite of all time. A perfect marriage of words from St. John Of the Cross centuries ago with Loreena's sublime melody and perfect accompaniment. Our Lord is rejoicing over this masterpiece!! 07-08-15 22:45:21 __________________________________________________ |
