fuzzy4ever9 ::: Favorites Last part. :-) To continue my previous post on situational awareness when piloting - A collision was averted at SFO recently in that an aircraft was directed onto a runway as another was landing. In that case the landing aircraft immediately took off clearing the first aircraft by a reported 30 to 50 feet. Search for flight 5741 if you are interested in reports on this. 07-08-02 13:43:59 __________________________________________________
fuzzy4ever9 ::: Favorites Youtube limits replies to 500 characters meaning a multi-part post. Thus the main failures seem to be the throttle was set wrong and then lack of awareness and response to that the aircraft was not slowing down as expected particularly as they knew the runway was slick and that they would only have one reverser available. You go into that kind of landing (or any landing) knowing that touch-and-go or go-around is quite likely. 07-08-02 13:42:47 __________________________________________________
fuzzy4ever9 ::: Favorites One other thought I had concerns language. English is used in commercial cockpits but may not be the first language for the crew. It's reported that co-pilot Lima's last recorded words are "Go! Go! Turn! Turn! Turn!" and I'm wondering if he was trying to communicate "go around" where they would take off. 07-08-02 13:40:42 __________________________________________________
fuzzy4ever9 ::: Favorites Yes, I saw the references to not-reverse thrusting. With one engine the reverser was disabled because of mechanical issues and the pilots knew about this. It's entirely possible the other engine's reverse was not deployed as the aircraft was not in the correct configuration. There is a news report about a throttle being set in the wrong spot and that would have prevented deployment of both the spoilers and the reverser. If that's the case it's a second pilot error. 07-08-02 13:39:16 __________________________________________________
SWSimpson ::: Favorites Right before the plane turns and flies off of the runway down into buildings below, you can see a small explosion that looks like it could be the engine. It has been reported the plane's reverse thrusters were not working, perhaps when they kicked the engines into forward thrust to try and take off again, the engine blew up? Faulty engine? 07-07-25 19:02:14 __________________________________________________
atenco01 ::: Favorites The A320 is a highly automated plane, something similar happened in the Philippines in the past. From Aviation Safety Network: Could it be too much automation? See Aviation Safety Network Date: 22 MAR 1998 Time: 19:41 Type: Airbus A.320-214 Operator: Philippine Air Lines 07-07-30 22:06:13 __________________________________________________
fuzzy4ever9 ::: Favorites I also saw the flash/explosion and assumed it was the aircraft striking a fence or lighting. The aircraft did a hard turn to the left and thus could have hit many things as it was no longer on the runway. It also seems from the cockpit audio leaked today that pilot error was involved in that they were trying to slow down rather than doing a go-around to try the landing again either at that airport or another with a longer runway. 07-08-02 02:46:44 __________________________________________________
SWSimpson ::: Favorites Could be right, could have clipped something just off of the runway. Have you heard that the engines were not reverse thrusting? At that speed, yes, they should have taken off. I saw a similar landing, but plane stopped before going off the edge- passengers came down the slides- nearly the same spot where this plane went over. So sad. 07-08-02 05:21:51 __________________________________________________ |
