Ha ha, that's cool Brad - I have a similar thing with an offline friend of mine who is a black woman. Isn't she due to post a video about homophobia/lack of same in Barbados?

I think so, I'm going to send her clips where I'm like "I just plain hate black people!"

I think I just may start speaking out when I hear it, too. (lol now that I have a job and have to be around more people, I'm sure a day will come when I over hear this happen just as you've described.)

I agree with you about the unacceptable jokes and comments that are made among white people. I refuse to laugh or join in, and I make it a point to let them know that I disapprove. I also agree with you that it has to be addressed every time, one-on-one.

I really like your response. I applaud you for being the one that brave enough to stick out in the crowd and combat everyday racism. *hugs* -Special K!

Thanks K! *hugs back* yeah, the big test will be my father-in-law's uncle. He is just horrible, always making disparaging comments about "the Mexicans". He's 80+ years old so I haven't confronted him before, but it's time. Good thing I only see him once a year, any more than that would be bad for my blood pressure. :)

Thanks! It's true, people change their minds when someone they respect stands up to them. Hearing it on the news or from someone they don't know has little effect. They just demonize the messenger.

Very cool. Yeah, it's still way too commonplace. I'm lucky to live in the little bubble of San Francisco where intolerance isn't tolerated :) but I still run into racist pigs from time to time.

I have a similar situation where I work. I work at a nursing home and there is a resident that always calls me the "little negro girl." And I was kind of offended at first and then I was like, this lady is like 90. Is it worth it?

I can relate to what you said about assumptions that just because everyone in a group is white, racial slurs are perfectly ok. I will not tolerate the use of racial degradation in any way in my presence. If that's not ok with the group...fine, I'll leave. If they're in my house, they will be invited to leave. I don't want those people in my life anyway if they can't respect MY feelings! Good for you for committing to stand up and be counted when encountering such ignorance!
